Doll Contest Rules

  1. “Dolls” may be purchased, modified, or handmade. Dolls do not have to be humanoid (aliens and animals are welcome). Purchased dolls must be legitimate, ‘recast’ artist dolls are not welcome*.
  2. You may enter a single doll or a themed group however:
    • groups should be done with smaller dolls, under 12 inches
    • displays should not become dioramas (some props are ok, walls and floors are not)
    • group displays should not exceed 17 inch wide by 10 inch deep
    • please use your best judgment understanding that there is a limit to space available.
  3. All dolls must be able to sit or stand on their own or be displayed with a stand/chair. Display tables may be jostled and your doll must be secure.
    • this does not apply to ‘plushie’ designs, but do take displaying them best into account when designing.
  4. Dolls should not exceed 30 inches in height for the full display (including hats), and 20 inches for width/depth.
    • Please be considerate of others and only use the space you need for your design.
  5. All entrants must be supporting or attending members of Costume-Con 42.
  6. Supporting members may have someone else bring their entries. Costume-Con 42 is not responsible for entries lost, delayed, misdirected, damaged, or destroyed by the delivery service of your choice.
  7. Documentation is optional and should be one 8×11 page, double spaced, or a trifold brochure.
  8. Judging will be based on: workmanship, fit of the garments to the doll, and creativity. Handmade and modified dolls will have additional judging for their specific categories. Store bought items must be disclosed and should not make up more than 20% of your entry.
  9. By submitting your entry, you are giving Costume-Con 42 (and its designated representatives) permission to photograph and/or videotape your entry for purposes of sale as part of post-convention packages. Your entries may also be photographed or videotaped, for personal enjoyment only, by members of Costume-Con 42.
  10. Display pieces are welcome. Display pieces still need the entry form filled out so that we can correctly display and return your doll.

* Recast is a term to describe bootleg resin or ball joint dolls that have been recast from artists’ work and sold without their permission. If you have questions about your doll, feel free to contact us at dolls@costumecon42.org.
